On Sunday 9th April, we were in sight of the barren coast of the Island of Sapota, to the South of Arabia and shortly after we passed Cape Gardafin. Next day, we entered the Red Sea, passing close to a British signalling station, and a couple of hospital ships bound for Australia with sick and wounded aboard. Going through the Red Sea, the heat was even more stifling and to make matters worse, I was unfortunate enough to get a touch of fever and was sent to the ship’s hospital with a temperature of 103° and for the next three days I lay in a bunk between sheets, eating nothing but jelly and fruit etc. and soon recovered sufficiently to go on deck again.
