On April 7th, I returned, per the Cologne-Boulogne Express to Charleroi, passing as before those historical fortress towns of Liege and Namur at which places were several battalions of Australian troops. After a late lunch, at 3 pm, at the Officers Club, I reported back to my piquet commander and went straight on duty in charge of a small piquet to the “bottom square” in the neighbourhood of the CafĂ© Central, in order to help quieten things down a bit after the results of pay day. I carried on as piquet officer in this easy going fashion until April 12th and was then recalled and the piquet was disbanded and all ranks returned to their units.
